The Writers’ Workshop – University of Iowa

Located in the city of Iowa, the University of Iowa is considered one of the best creative writing schools in the country. In large part, this is owing to a prestigious program with the informal title of Iowa Writers’ Workshop (formally known as Program in Creative Writing). This program is run from a relatively insignificant-looking building on the university’s Midwest campus. Because of the modest appearance of the building, it is easy to pass over the Workshop. Such oversight would be a great shame!

The Workshop program is a graduate one and students are awarded a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in English when they complete it. The workshops are based on either fiction or poetry over four terms or semesters. Apart from these core subjects, students are also taught particular writing techniques and there are a few limited places to study subjects that are totally unrelated to writing.

There are even some courses available through the Writers’ Workshop for undergraduates, all of which makes the University of Iowa one of the top places for every level of student.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Although the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has a strong technical focus (mainly technology and engineering), it surprises many to learn it is also one of the USA’s best schools for Located in Cambridge (not far from Boston), this university offers a very effective and unique program for aspiring writers!

MIT’s department of Writing and Humanistic Studies offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Writing, covering three disciplines which are a) creative writing, b) science writing, and c) digital media. While it is possible to focus exclusively on creative writing, having the option of the other two types of writing in one-degree course allows students to enjoy a diversified education in the field of writing. This diversification is not available elsewhere. The instruction given on creative writing is focused on poetry, prose, fiction, and non-fiction, and there are other classes covering other genres of writing. When looking for creative writing classes, you should not pass over MIT simply because of its technical reputation!
